Inferno threatens Kingston Landmark

A vestige from the earliest days of the city suffered a major accident last night, as a fire broke out at St. Mary's Cathedral.

Firefighters were luckily able to contain the blaze to the basement, preventing any major structural damage to the majority of the building, however the lower levels of the historic church were ravaged in the conflagration.

(Title Card: Craig Johnson, KFD) "We did what we could to put it out quickly, while still ensuring as little damage to the integral parts of the foundation. The fire started down there, in a sub-basement that no one knew existed. That level was completely destroyed, and the basement above that level suffered considerable losses."

The archdiocese will be immediately rebuilding in order to not disrupt normal services as much as possible. On the news of the sub-basement, they expressed surprise, and lamented that it was completely destroyed as they would be interested in learning exactly what was down there.
