Frequently Asked Questions
What is Kingston By Night?
Kingston By Night (aka KBN) is a Live Action Roleplay (aka LARP) group. We play a parlor LARP using White Wolf Publishing's Vampire: Requiem ruleset.
What is Live Action Roleplay?
Live Action Roleplay (LARP) is a style of roleplaying game where the players act out their character's actions and reactions instead of describing them while sitting at a table (like with Dungeons and Dragons).
So it's like what I've seen in movies/TV?
Not exactly. Mainstream media usually portrays a style of LARP known as Boffer LARP. Boffer LARP usually involves a weekend-long event held at a campground or other large open space, in which characters engage in combat with each other using foam weapons called "boffer" weapons.
How is KBN different?
KBN is a parlor LARP. Parlor LARPs take place (usually) indoors and don't involve the physical aspect of combat. Any challenges (including combat) are resolved using a system of statistics and an element of chance (Rock Paper Scissors for Masquerade, other systems employ different elements of chance.)
What is Vampire: Requiem?
Vampire: Requiem is a rule system from White Wolf Publishing. It exists as a tabletop and LARP setting. The LARP version is also known as Mind's Eye Theatre.
Vampire: Requiem is one of a handful of settings within White Wolf's Chronicles of Darkness shared universe in which several supernatural creatures exist, including Werewolves, Mages, Changelings (Fairies) and Zombies.
Is it for all ages?
The Chronicles of Darkness as a whole is a horror setting. Inherent in this is expecting that the world is a lot darker than the real world, including a number of potentially adult themes. Age limits exist on a group by group basis.
KBN accepts anyone 18+. Anyone 16 or 17 may be considered, but only after parental consultation.
What kind of people participate in LARPing?
We get anyone from gamers to actors and in between. It is a great opportunity to keep an actor's improvisational skills sharp, as well as good practice with character work. It's also fun for gamers to fully embody a character instead of just imagining or using a mini on a map.
Do we need elaborate costumes and props?
With boffer LARP, costuming and props are very important in order to maintain a level of immersion in the setting. They are often also set in different time periods than modern day. Because Chronicles of Darkness settings are generally modern day, costuming doesn't necessarily need to be overly elaborate or expensive. Props are useful for visualization, but not necessary as items are represented by information on index cards.
How do we win/lose?
White Wolf games are Storytelling games, which means (like D&D) there is no winning or losing, just telling an amazing story with everyone involved.
